Gilding {Gold Leafing} with Stencils
Supplies needed:
Optional supplies used in sample:
- Cardstock
- Super Sticky Tape
- Stencil
- Gilding Flakes
- Rub It Scrub It Pad
- Scissors
Optional supplies used in sample:
- Bling on a Roll
- Piccolo
- Instant UV Resin
Start by covering your cardstock with Super Sticky Tape.
I used a layering swatch and put 2-1/2" tape across the bottom.
You could use Super Sticky Tape Sheets and cut them to the desired height and width.
Peel the release paper liner from the Super Sticky Tape (keep the release paper in your hand).
Place your stencil over the exposed adhesive and burnish it onto the tape using the release paper.

Place gilding flakes over adhesive. {I like to do this step over a container or box top, so I can catch any stray flakes and return them to the jar!} Push the flakes down and rub them in really well. Use a piece of Rub It Scrub It pad to burnish the gilding flakes by rubbing with some pressure in small circles or just one direction. |
Once burnished, it should look a lot smoother, like this ==>
When you remove the stencil, there will still be a sticky area on the tape where the stencil was. You will need to fill this in with something.
I'm using Sugar Sand which is itty bitty clear holeless glass beads. They will fill in the area nicely and let the background colors show through.
If you are doing this technique on black cardstock, you can use Fine Detail Black EP as your background filler.
You can heat the EP without messing up the gilding flakes, but the EP will get shiny.
If you prefer a matte finish black, simply don't heat the EP.
Add some bling above the gilded stencil area by putting a strip of 1/8" tape across your card and adhering a strip of Bling on a Roll.
I wanted to add a distressed looking edge to this, so I used my scissors and ran up and down the cardstock to distress it. |

I also distressed a dark brown cardstock that I adhered this panel to. A Piccolo cross accent that was gilded with a different color of flakes was added, along with a center of Instant UV Resin.
